**First Woman Named to Top Role at YMCA National Office Highlighted During Black History Month**
Akron, OH — The Akron Area YMCA recently celebrated the remarkable contributions of Violet P. Henry as part of their Black History Month recognition. Henry made history in 1976 when she became the first woman to be appointed to a top management position at the YMCA's national office.
Before this groundbreaking milestone, Henry held a variety of executive leadership roles in the Newark and Chicago YMCAs. Throughout her career, she championed initiatives aimed at advancing the rights of women and people of color. Her leadership extended to numerous national and international commissions and committees, where she made a lasting impact.
The celebration aligns with the YMCA’s commitment to honoring individuals who have advocated for equality and inclusion. Programs like this highlight the importance of remembering the achievements of those like Henry who broke barriers and paved the way for future generations.
