Akron Mayor Highlights Progress, Challenges and Collaborations
Akron Mayor Malik recently spoke with the Akron Beacon Journal about the challenges and accomplishments facing the city over the past two years. He noted that housing and homelessness remain significant challenges in Akron. Mayor Malik highlighted efforts by his administration, including the creation of a Crime Gun Intelligence Center in partnership with federal, state, and local agencies, and the city's first use of force review.
The administration has also worked with community partners on initiatives such as the Street Team Pilot and the Right to Counsel Pilot Program, a collaboration with United Way and Community Legal Aid aimed at combating evictions. Other key efforts include the development of a Unified Early Learning System to enhance early childcare, a focus on youth opportunity to help young residents thrive, and the establishment of the Downtown Akron Development Corporation to drive urban development.
In addition to these projects, Mayor Malik mentioned collaboration with federal and state partners on Operation Double Eagle. The mayor emphasized that working together with community stakeholders, government, non-profit organizations, and businesses is essential to address the challenges Akron faces. Mayor Malik stated that while progress has been made, significant work still lies ahead, and his administration is committed to continuing its service to Akron residents in the coming years.
