Apex School Earns Global Readiness Award
Smith IB Magnet Elementary in Apex, North Carolina, has become the first school in the Wake County Public Schools district to earn the North Carolina Department of Instruction Model Global Readiness Designation. The school was recognized for its innovative approach to global education, with a focus on 10 attributes of successful global schools, including creating school partnerships and developing classroom projects that encourage students to think globally and act locally.
Assistant Principal Sonya Brown and teacher Laura Bottomley led the team of educators in developing and showcasing these attributes. As part of the process, teachers participated in professional development that allowed them to earn a Global Education Digital Badge.
The recognition was formalized in an award ceremony where DPI representative Kelly Schultz presented the school with a banner and a letter signed by State Superintendent Mo Green. The designation comes from the North Carolina State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction.
